Heart and Stroke Foundation warns: time crunch is stealing healthy years from Canadians

Canadians are so focused on the here and now that they are losing out on the opportunity to live a full and healthy life, warns the Heart and Stroke Foundation (HSF). Its new survey of more than 2,000 adults found that even though Canadians know how to protect their heart health, the majority can’t or won’t commit the time to do so.

We’re not suggesting that there are any easy solutions to the time crunch that gets in the way of being active and eating healthily, however, here are a few points for our UHN staff:

1. Can’t get motivated? Call us (14-4486) – we’ll happily help you set realistic goals and pester you to ensure you’re on-track! (we’re expert “naggers”)

2. Sign up for some wellness, personal training or individual dietitian sesssions. Stefanie, our new RD is here every week…

3. Plan your meals. Does that seem a bit daunting? Call our EAP provider, you can speak to a nutritionist for FREE 1-800-387-4765

4. Exercise with a friend – it’s hard to let them down once you’ve made a commitment

5. Write down your health goals and track your accomplishments – it’s more likely to happen if its written down

6. Exercise in 10 minute increments (surely you can find 10 minutes?!)

7. Join our walking or running groups. Kevin leads a run group every Tues at 5pm (yes through the winter too)

9. participate in a wellness cooking demonstration – hey, we even give your FREE samples to taste

10. Bring fruit and veg to work each day as a snack

11. Drop into the wellness centre and we’ll take your blood pressure, calculate your BMI, help you set your goals, give you LOTS of information…(we promise not to nag too much)

12. Look at the nutritional information before you place your next order at Tim Hortons 🙂 Think a raisin bran muffin might be healthy? Not really. It packs in 410 calories, considerably more than a plain white bagel (and less carbs too!)

Arrived from UK 20 years ago to work in Canada for a year and still not visited Italy.
